They changed it so you could only post if you were a paying subscriber to the magazine. This was a niche market (I'd say similar but maybe slightly smaller than a language learning community) and in the end they had to re-open the board to everyone because of the loss of activity. The number of comments haven't seemed to have changed much since the switch so it might not be a big deal. It's still too early to tell but maybe nothing will really change in terms of activity on the site. They probably have a better idea on whether free members ever contributed anything back.
