I definitely agree with the comment about comics. If you’re living in Japan they can be picked up at places like book-off for ￥100-￥250. Also there’s an endless variety! Many have furigana written above the difficult words, so it’s great for pronunciation and looking up words.

Adult learners could read comic books. They’re pretty simple in terms of grammar, but still interesting. Interview transcripts are also good because the grammar is a lot easier. Poems are also good, too.

確かに、「原文」がぴったりですね。その時、「原」しか思い出せなくて、「原資料」と書いてしまいました。思い出させてくれて、ありがとうございます。やはり、日本から離れて、日本語能力が落ちているとしか思えません。

そうですね。グーグルで「言語を勉強する」で検索してみても、「外国語を勉強する」というニュアンスの文はほとんどなくて、あるのはC「言語を勉強する」とかプログラミング「言語を勉強する」といったものばかりなので、俺の内省は間違ってはいないと思います(もちろん「言語を勉強する」を容認可能とする人はいると思います)。あと、原資料というとなにか学術的な調査をする(歴史学など)時に利用する資料という意味合いなので、外国語の学習の場合は「原文」という単語の方がピッタリです。

I also recommend Read Real Japanese for someone with a solid knowledge of basic grammar. I picked up this book after 2 years of college study and a summer in Japan. I don’t know how many times I reread the first short story in the book 逃がした魚は大きかった just because it was such a relief to be able to have finally read something genuine in Japanese.

The author of that book makes a good point in the introduction that compared to other languages taught at the college level, it takes a really long time before students are able to read in Japanese. I think students need to keep this in mind and not try to apply previous SLA expectations to the Japanese learning process.

This is awesome. I’ve been looking everywhere for something to fill this gap. More than anything I think reading all the time developed my English skills as a kid, and it’s near impossible to find interesting stuff to read in Japanese (at my level). If you keep writing, I’ll keep reading! I can only trudge through so many fairy tales…

Incidentally, I’ve got the Read Real Japanese Fiction book, and it’s amazing. The level of detail is incredible, and it’s a completely self-contained learning resource (with dictionary, grammar explanations, &c.). Unfortunately for me, it’s just a liiiittle over my head, even with the explanations. Takes me like an hour to get through a page. But it’s still more fun than textbook dialogs.

「言語を勉強するには原資料を強く推進しています。」は「外国語を勉強する時は、原文を読むことを強くお勧めしています。」の方がいいと思うよ。「言語」だと、言語それ自体(言語のメカニズムのようなこと)という意味も含んでしまうのでちょっと座りが悪い単語なんですね。その文のなかで自然に「言語」という単語を使いたい場合は、「ある言語」とか「言語をなにかしら」という風にすると、具体性を持った個々の外国語という意味になっていい感じです。
