I don't know if anybody has any interest other than me, but FYI:
I'm still making slow progress, but after every change I'm still pushing it out to a temporary location: http://www.ifm-services.com/tmp/JGJG.pdf

Wow, that looks really great! Keep up the great work. Over 200 pages, who knew? The last empty pages makes me want to finally get back on finishing them.

Yes, over 200 pages with a single-space 12 point font! You're a real author, Tae Kim! Can you believe it?
The problem I've found, with hardcopy vs. HTML is that the ingenious mouse-over pop-ups for the Japanese text (that exist in the Guide) don't translate very well to paper. I decided to add ふりがな, but I've not decided what to do with the translations. Right now I'm dumping vocabulary into a spreadsheet, deferring that decision. It's pretty rotten and ugly but at least I can sort the columns.
After I'm done with the ふりがな (maybe in the year 3872; I'm on page 157), I'll finish adding the hyperlinks as both hyperlinks (which work in the PDF) and footnotes (for hardcopy).
That'll be the majority of the effort, but there's some other unifying cleanup that I'd like to do; I'll decide if it's worth the effort when I get there.

FYI I've completed the ふりがな --- though, since I'm a noob, I can't vouch for correctness. I did my best. I've also completed converting hyperlinks to footnotes.
As it stands, the last major thing is the mouse-over translations. I'm not sure what to do with that at this point.

blackpuma, this is completely awesome! Good work! I wish I had seen this long ago. Back in October when I first found this site the first thing that came to mind "Now if only I had a hard copy to take to the bathroom..."
I wonder what it would cost to get it published, like on CafePress, in a small paperback book perhaps.

Oooh... now that's an idea. I've never tried to do this in OO, but I'm stuffing it in my notes to check out.

... get it published ...
Thank you for the kind words. There would have to be a boatload of editing done to get the document to that point, but the thought crossed my mind momentarily.

Well, it didn't exist back then. ![]()

FYI: Minor tweak to the PDF. No textual changes.
The Table of Contents page numbers didn't have hyperlinks.

That was going to be my suggestion but you had mentioned hyperlinking earlier so I figured you had it under control. Hyperlinking ToC is a very good thing. Especially with two hundred and fifty-plus pages. Of course, you can always just enter the page number in Acrobat Reader, but hyperlinks are more stylish. ![]()

hyperlinks are more stylish.
To me they have a high degree of utility, and thus are important.
I've not attempted to put in the internal hyperlinks (other than the ToC), though admittedly they'd be extremely nice. Right now the internal hyperlinks exist only as foot notes saying See the "foo" heading in the bar lesson.
BTW, I'm completely open to suggestions. Don't hesitate to fire away. I have a small "to do" list, but since the PDF port appears to be more or less usable, it's going to drop in priority a bit. I've been hacking on the document rather than studying Japanese. ![]()

FYI:
I took a formatting axe to the examples. They look (to me at least) much cleaner. I also caught a couple of ふりがな typos.
* Enumerated examples should have the enumerator in full-width characters (e.g. "(1)") with an indentation of 1".
* Translation rests immediately below the sample text with the same indentation.
* Dialogue should have name followed by : with the same 1" indentation.
Latest revision is 0.0.23, and may be found at http://www.ifm-services.com/tmp/JGJG.pdf
(Yeah, typographically it's realy ugly, but IMHO it's minimally functional at this point.)

???? I just successfully downloaded it and opened it from my machine. Yeah... I know, the infamous "works on my machine" syndrome.
Did you try right-clicking on the hyperlink and doing a "save link as" (or whatever the menu item is called in IE).
Has anybody else encountered a problem using Windows? I'm not in a position right now to try Windows at this moment.

Wow! it looks great! And i just printed the whole html single page file, gonna have to print again =].
I was just wondering what's gonna happen with the typos that still exist on the current guide, as well as the new sections that are going to be added.
Offline
The last sections will be completed by Tae Kim as his time allows.
I haven't fully synched up to get all the corrections, but a lot are there already. I push out a new version with every change I make (after checking it into revision control).
The index is mine. I'll finish it some day, but it's a low priority for me. Part of the work is just determining what to add to the index. What exists there now is more a test to see how it looks, rather than a concerted effort to create a proper index.
You'll also notice that the nice pop-up translations for the kanji is missing. That's something that's not an easy transition from web to paper. I addd furigana to partially compensate, but it's more of a bandaid than a solution.
Oh, and I've not made any effort to include the exercises at this point.
If there's anything you'd like to see in the PDF, please let me know.
If you find any errors that are PDF-specific (furigana is especially at risk for errors), please let me know.

For the pop up translations, what about adding a 'word list' before every lessons, including the words that appear on the lesson, with its kana and english meaning? that may solve the problem.
Offline
I agree with the previous post regarding a word list, but I'd like to say what an incredible job you're doing with the guide. It really looks fantastic. I'll be buying a new printer cartridge tomorrow!
