なんて Usage and meaning(s)

みなさんへ、

I've searched through with so many different search engines now and still can't find the meaning of "なんて" in a phrase. For example:

日本にこんな学校が、あるなんて知らなかった！

Obviously I can suss out from this sentence that the speaker is saying they never would have believed there were schools like this in Japan (before he came). So, would that mean "なんて" is just a way to add exclamation, but surely it must be different from just adding a よ at the end...better yet, if someone can explain how  "なんて" works - what are the rules for using it in a sentence, do you need to conjugate the verb before it...like put it in dictionary form, say like in this example?

Ahh! My Japanese isn't THAT good, haha, but thanks!

From what I understand of what's written in this dictionary, it's an expressive device..but can anyone link/explain how it works, how to use it...and what it means exactly? If that makes sese?

Gotta jump into the deep end sometime. At least rikaichan gives you a life jacket (and reading Japanese dictionaries will push your Japanese real fast ) Since you're able to guess at 「なんて」's "meaning" in that example sentence, your ready to take the plunge.

One thing I've learned from reading Japanese dictionaries: there are a lot of "words" in Japanese that have no real meaning as such, but rather have a function (adding flavor, converting preceding clauses into various parts of speech, giving hints (and possibly disabiguating) following text, etc)

「なんて」 works sort of like 「～は」「～ということは」etc, but with a(n often) slightly condescending feel. Beyond that, expose yourself to as much Japanese as possible (l33t-raws.org is a good place to start: the anime episode without 「なんて」 or similar (eg, 「だって」) is a rare beast. just be aware that what's said in anime isn't necessarily good to say on the street )

pink~himeさんが使ってる辞典は何ですか。「なんて」をYahooの辞典でもgooの辞典でも検索したら違う定義で、何使ってるかちょっと気になってるのです。(∩.∩)
