幾重にも重なる

This is the opening of a chapter of Kino no Tabi:

草の絨毯が、果てなくどこまでも続いていた。緑の大地は緩やかにうねり、幾重にも重なりながら地平線の向こうへと消えていく。

From some quick googling, '幾重にも重なる' seems to be a very common expression, but I'm not sure what it means in this sentence. Is it describing something like this?

Yep. The things in the photo aren't a grass field but mountains though.


Please correct my English.
