I don't like ローマ字, as well as the QWERTY layout, so it's long since I've started using the native Japanese keyboard layout. But since I don't have a true Japanese keyboard, the actual layout I get is a little distorted (which is fine for me), and, more important, I can input only very basic punctuation characters: commas, periods, braces, dashes. No question mark or anything else!
But the IME sometimes lists punctuation characters in the list of conversion variants. For example, てん yields a variety of point combinations, and ならば produces '⇒'. What other text strings can be used to input punctuation characters?

Some of these don`t necessarily have that much to do with punctuation exactly, but...
きごう - Something of a master list.
ろしあ - Russian characters
ほし - Stars
まる - Circle
ばつ - x
ぎもんふ - ?
かんたんふ - !

やじるし lets you produce a variety of arrows, including →、←、↑、↓
ころん will produce :
せみころん will produce ;

Thank you. I wonder, what characters like ㍍, or ㍼, or ㊧ are used for... ![]()
Also there is the ~ character, which is quite often used in online text - what intonation exactly does it convey? And is there a way to input it without browsing through the きごう list?

~ hit the ‘ ~ key on your keyboard, the one beside the 1 key. After a kana all it does is elongate the vowel sound somewhat exageratedly です~ similar to ですゥ I guess.
It's obviously used for other purposes like ~してはいけない; a place holder.
㍍=メートル=metre
㊧ emphasis - there's a whole bunch of these encircled characters.

It doesn't work with the input method he's using - ろ gets mapped there, on a US keyboard. I've been looking for that myself, so I don't have to click the KANA button to enter it - じょうせん doesn't work, ちるだ doesn't work - anyone know of another name for that symbol? ~ - well, it's on the きごう list, but that's hard to search, and it seems to be used often enough that you'd think there'd be an easier way to find it.

Well, it's pretty obvious what it means. The question is, why would anyone need to create a special character for it... ![]()
Found a fairly comprehensive list of codes here
Wow, it even has builtin smilies ![]()

Just because of saving the space: it is in particular useful when the space of a table or chart cell is limited in some format.

Interesting, it seems there are 国字 for metric measurements.
Mass:
瓱
瓰
甅
瓦
瓧
瓸
瓩
瓲
Volume:
竓
竕
竰
立
竍
竡
竏
Distance:
粍
粉
糎
米
籵
粨
粁
I get the feeling that these REALLY aren't used much seeing as one could just use the correct SI unit instead. mm cm m etc. Though I guess these have the advantage of always being one character.
