「今日は授業がない」と先生から聞いたんだけど。
I think I understand the purpose of kedo, but I don't understand it's meaning when it occurs at the end of a sentence like the one above. Could I get someone to chime with with an explanation?
It softens a statement by adding an implied excuse etc. The same thing can be done with a sentence-final が.
Does it have an actual meaning, or does it just convey a tone? I'm learning Japanese in isolation here, so bear with my ignorant questions.
Well, it's still "but", the same thing happens in English (possibly depending on dialect): "The teacher said there's no class today, but..."
