Topic: questions on ”よくわからないですけど”
i always hear "よくわからないですけど” in anime. Isn't "わからない” a verb? I thought it can only be "わかりませんけど” or”わからないけど”. or is it indeed "よくわからない,ですけど?

わからない is a compound word of わかる + ない, which is an い adjective, and the です is a suffix that stands for polightness.

わからないです is a colloquialism for わかりません, just like 遠くないです is a colloquialism for 遠くありません. It's much less accepted: わかりませんけど and 遠くないですけど are the correct forms for polite but not formal speech.

I think the form ないです is " more" acceptable for adjectives than for verbs. Thus 遠くないです can be excused unlike 分からないです which is considered inadmissible by authorities. (though still frequently used I would suppose.)
