:)I heard this phrase in a song and it confused me. In the similarity and hearsay section it says to change the い to さ and then add そう for the negative tense, but ふれちゃいそう doesn't seem to follow that. The only thing I can think of is that it should be ふれちゃさそう due to it's full form being ふれてはない which would therefore be ふれてはなさそう, but it wouldn't sound right with the contraction so it isn't or wasn't conjugated that way?
どうも in advance:D

There are two ways of using そう
~てはなさそう
~てはないそう
are both possible.
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/similarity
- I think they're both covered here, one under Guessing at an outcome using 「~そう」, the other at Expressing hearsay using 「~そうだ」
Your understanding of the contraction is correct, it's based on ふれてはないそう

Isn't "ちゃ" also used as a contraction for ”てしまう”?
My guess is that ふれちゃいそう is ふれてしまいそう in this case.

Yeah, you're right, I misread the first as ふれちゃないそう somehow. (恥)

I seem to recall a similar question not long ago that you (jenl) answered the same way, taking ~ちゃい as meaning ~てはない...

Yup, ふれちゃいそう is the short form of ふれてしまいそう,
but do note that ふれちゃいそう/ふれてしまいそう are affirmative, and therefore have nothing to do with the negative ~なさそう form. ![]()
But I'm sure this was already clear, so just saying the obvious.. again ![]()

ありがとう皆さん:D It had completely slipped my mind that ちゃい could also be a contracted -てしまう:P
@stardust yugi: you're comment was kinda rude:mad: Dont be like that:/

Wait a minute if ふれちゃい were for the negative shouldn't it have been ふれちゃない given that the negative would indeed be a contraction of ふれてはない?
Wait a minute if ふれちゃい were for the negative
It isn't, I believe.

You cannot say ふれちゃない. There is no such a contraction in Japanese.
ふれては△ない(△ means a short pause here) is indeed used for a contraction of ふれてはいない, but it should be ふれちゃいない when used in informal conversation: い after ちゃ is indispensable in this contraction.

Thank you for the clarifications, everybody! I've obviously got my wires badly crossed somewhere. ![]()
