I'm pretty sure that 子 is

I'm pretty sure that 子 is also used to simply mean "young" in cases other than for human children, such as やぎ(goat) and 子やぎ (child goat.)

子 is also used in given names, such as 赤子(red+child= red child, a girl's name.)
子供 is just used for human children, while 子 has many other uses.

As for 友達 there seem to be other words for friend, such as 友人(friend person)。〜友 is rooted in many words relating to"friend"-- such as 学友 (learning friend) and 校友(school friend, alumnus.)

As for 学校、学=learning and 校=school. There you have, "learning school." Just 校 alone for "school" might work, but why not make you work harder?
