Its a toss up. I'd argue slang shouldn't be treated at all until someone has the basics. Its a (lowish) bar to entry for good reason. But then again, much slang is restricted to verbal use, and kanji is strictly written so there is merit for the argument from the point of view of someone learning predominatly verbally from natives.
