I'd say it's because it's being said at the end of the day. "I have work tomorrow, but I didn't have work today", as opposed to saying it in the morning to afternoon where you'd say "I have work tomorrow, but I don't have work today". It's misleading, I admit, but makes sense once you've figured it out.
