Examples of もととなる:

【起点】物事のもととなる点。

The もととなる in the examples are used as an adjective. An approximate translation in English would be "the basic something". Thus:

[Materials] The basic items required in order to do (for the process of doing) something. Refers especially to research data.

The kanji for もと is probably best written as 素（素材・元素・要素）.
