{"id":33,"date":"2011-07-27T17:00:09","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T22:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nihongo.3yen.com\/?p=156"},"modified":"2011-08-08T10:15:54","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T15:15:54","slug":"explaining-the-explaining-%e3%81%ae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.guidetojapanese.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/27\/explaining-the-explaining-%e3%81%ae\/","title":{"rendered":"Explaining the explaining \u306e"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s how I typically explain the explanatory \u300c\u306e\u300d when I teach it to my students.<\/p>\n<p>Question: I don&#8217;t understand the difference between the two:<br \/>\n1. \u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u3042\u308a\u307e\u3059\u3002<br \/>\n2. \u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u3042\u308b<b>\u3093\u3067\u3059<\/b>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>I fire back with another question: How would you say, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t there class today?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u300c\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u3042\u308a\u307e\u305b\u3093\u304b\uff1f\u300d simply means &#8220;Is there no class today?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Isn&#8217;t there class today?&#8221; sounds like the speaker is expecting to have class today and is surprised that that may not be the case. That&#8217;s what we call seeking an explanation, which requires using \u300c\u306e\u300d.<\/p>\n<p>So the answer is:<br \/>\n\u300c\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u306a\u3044<b>\u306e<\/b>\uff1f\u300d<br \/>\nor<br \/>\n\u300c\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c<b>\u306a\u3044\u3093\u3067\u3059<\/b>\u304b\uff1f\u300d<\/p>\n<p>The simple answer to such a question would be:<br \/>\n\u300c\u306f\u3044\u3001\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u306a\u3044\u3093\u3067\u3059\u3002\u300d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, \u300c\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c\u3042\u308b\u3093\u3067\u3059\u3002\u300d is saying that there is class today as an explanation for something. For example, maybe you want to explain why you can&#8217;t go to lunch.<\/p>\n<p>A-san: \u663c\u3054\u306f\u3093\u3092\u4e00\u7dd2\u306b\u98df\u3079\u307e\u305b\u3093\u304b\uff1f<br \/>\nB-san: \u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3001\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u6388\u696d\u304c<b>\u3042\u308b\u3093\u3067\u3059<\/b>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>It helps to figure out the difference by looking at a situation where you <i>have<\/i> to use \u300c\u306e\u300d to say something.
