It seems every language has different ideas of what it means to be something. Spanish has ser vs estar, Chinese has \u662f\uff0c\u5728\uff0c\u6709\uff0cand of course nothing. (It seems anything and everything in Chinese can be omitted and implied.) Japanese also has a distinction between properties of the thing itself \uff08implied\u3001\u3060\u3001\u3067\u3059\uff09 versus where it exists \uff08\u3042\u308b\u3001\u3044\u308b\uff09.<\/p>\n
The verb \u300c\u3042\u308b\u300d can be used in some interesting ways to define existence in a way that’s not entirely obvious, hence this post.<\/p>\n

I hope to cover the different aspects of \u30dc\u30b1 and \u30c4\u30c3\u30b3\u30df and its importance in understanding Japanese humor but that’s another post that will probably sit in my draft folder for another couple years.
